Where are the decent restaurants in Paris?

After many trips to Paris I am really really disillusioned with the poor food (and smoky restaurants). Does anyone know any decent places to eat that are not tooooo expensive? I usually stay in the Opera/Madeleine district which I now understand is not the best area for good food, but I don%26#39;t mind travelling a few stops on the metro if it means I get some decent food for a change. Any help appreciated.

You could start here, in the Insider Pages:

tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187147-c1045/Paris:F…

You could enter %26quot;restaurants%26quot; , %26quot;bistro%26quot;, %26quot;dining%26quot; into the forum search... you know there are loads of recommendations here, right?

You must have a knack for finding the restaurants you descibe. Ok, so not all Paris restaurants are brilliant, but with little effort - and some research - you can find good eating for under 20Euros.

Depending on what you call good eating, of course.

I always enjoy the restaurants in the Marais (Marche St. Catherine has a number of cute and quiet spots, and if I%26#39;m in the mood for Spanish cuisine I head to Caves St. Gilles on rue St. Gilles). In a pinch I bring visitors to rue Guisarde (right above St. Sulpice) where there are a variety of restaurants with moderately priced prix fixe menus (marticular favorite was %26quot;La Boussole%26quot;).

For nicer evenings out (read: more expensive), I always enjoy %26quot;le Pamphlet%26quot; on rue Debelleyme (3rd arr) and L%26#39;Epi Dupin on rue Dupin (6th).

Lastly, I love the %26quot;Time Out%26quot; Dining guide. It%26#39;s honest and has a good selection of restaurants in every arrondissement.

Hope this helps!

Perhaps to get a better idea of what you consider %26quot;..poor food..%26#39; it would be useful if you listed the names of some of the restaurants you%26#39;ve already tried--and been dissatisfied with--in Paris to get some idea of your concept of %26quot;..poor food..%26quot; and %26quot;.. tooooo expensive..%26quot;. If your tastes and budget run more to the %26#39;..two-penny ordinary..%26#39; and take-way vindaloo and curry, it would be waste of time to recommend establishments that are likely to run 35-60 € per person. So where and what have you eaten in Paris ??

I certainly understand why you would find Paris a bit of a culinary wasteland but you are a bit spolied coming as you do from the epicentre of fine cuisine, northwest England...

However, if you willl equip yourself with either a Pudlo or Lebey restaurant guide — or even both if you are feeling extravagant — you *might* find somewhere listed in their pages where the food is fit to eat. No guarantees mind you...

PS: For those who do not think of northern England as a culinary mecca, if you%26#39;ve never had a chip butty in Burnley, you%26#39;ve never had a chip butty!

Have eaten at quite a few moderately priced restos in Paris, here%26#39;s one I highly recommend

Le Hangar

Passage du Berthaud

3rd arrondisement

very near Centre Pompidou, forgot the name of the metro stop there.

Gee, maybe there aren%26quot;t any?

I mean after %26quot; many trips%26quot; it is obvious that you have discovered Paris secret, ,, thats right, terrible food is the rule!

I mean sure the world raves about French cusine, and sure there are world renown restaurants galore, but, it is all just rumors and proganda put on by the Parisian Tourist Department.

LOL, sorry , you just worded the title of the thread so awkardly,, I wonder, do you eat in places that post the menu with the english in large letters and the french in small?

And. what is cheap,, I mean sheesh, do you eat out at home, I found the UK so expensive for food it wasn%26#39; t funny!

I found and like this cute little restaruant called %26quot;Au Vieux Paris d%26quot;Arcole%26quot;.

www.auvieuxparis.fr

The building is ivy covered, and very romantic and cosy looking inside ( rue Chanoinesse). The menu orange duck is very good. You can reserve on line and get a free drink.

They also rent rooms above and next to the restaruant. Information is posted right outside the door.
