...Paris here we come............!! can't wait.....!!

Hi,

hubby and i are off to Paris this coming Friday (17th Aug).

Children (2), safely left at Grandparents, and enjoying THEMSELVES...!!

...So we have grabbed ourselves a city break treat....

I do not know the name of the Hotel (hubby has booked this..), but i know the location - apparently (according to brochure), we are in one of the finest locations in Paris, just off the Place Vendome, 10 mins walk from the Louvre and Place de la Concorde...!!

Okay, so this means nothing to me, is there anyone can recommend great bars or Restaurants for us, we only booked Bed and Breakfast, anything we absolutely shouldnt miss doing (apart from the obvious Eiffel,,), any tips etc etc.... trying to decide what to pack for the 4 days 3 nights, bit of a nightmare, weather etc..?

....any help gratefully received....... luv DmM......x....

Have fun. Don%26#39;t try to do too much. Wander around, eat, drink, wander around, repeat.

Have you been there before? It sounds like your first time. We were there back in May for our second trip. My wife is still in a severe case of Post Paris Depression.

Paris is a wonderful city. We are already planning what will hopefully be another trip to Paris in a couple years.

We really like the DK guide book and the Paris Walks cards. Both are very helpful in finding your way to the good spots.

Have a great time!

.........hi there, thanks for taking the time and trouble to reply....

Yes i have been to Paris before, many many years ago, 1979 i think to be almost exact, was just passing through on way to South of France, so the only thing we did was go up the Eiffel tower, so am planning lots more this time, but as you say, not too much, we will enjoy it, take my word for that................

.............we plan to return again in the future, with our two girls aged 15 and nearly 13, eldest has already put in her requests for certain items, etc etc..... i told her we will do all that on another visit, do not intend to spend my time %26#39;shopping%26#39;, not all the time anyway, we love nice restaurants, trendy bars, places with a bit of life, so got some research to do..... eeek going this Friday.... am just researching %26#39;footwear%26#39; on the Paris forum at this time, hilarious, but quite informative, actually now giving it some thought, not really bothered about the trendy bit (in the daytime), just need comfort....!!

.................any other tips gratefully received.......

.........................thanks again best wishes, dMm.....X.................

You have picked a very nice part of Paris. It%26#39;s very walkable to quite a few places.

The Jardin des Tuileries is along the Seine, and provides a nice place to sit, watch people, feed birds, and enjoy an espresso.

You are only a half-mile or so from Champs Elysees, and if you head west on that road you will find many nice cafes, bars and restuarants. Suggest you try Fouquet%26#39;s on the Champs Elysees, it%26#39;s something of a classic. Plus once you are near Fouquet%26#39;s you will find a lot of small side streets (leading either way from the main street) with wonderful little places to eat!! I%26#39;ve had dozens of meals along there, and am rarely disappointed.

In the other direction (east) from where you are staying you%26#39;ll find the Louvre and then continuing east to Notre Dame, both of which are classic Paris. Just across the Seine from Notre Dame is another great, smaller church but very ornate. It%26#39;s on the main street that crosses the Seine, just cannot recall the name.

Once you are that side, you are in the Latin Quarter. There are literally hundreds of places to eat there. Just wander off the main streets and enjoy yourself!!

If you like medieval art, you should definitely find the Cluny Museum. It%26#39;s most comprehensive, and a really cool old building also.

And if you have any interest in Asian art, there is a fantastic four-story museum near the Eiffel Tower (but on the same side of the river as Arc de Triomphe, opposite the Tower). I cannot recall the name but it%26#39;s simply amazing. I never realized how much diversity, and similarity, there was in the Asian cultures.

Further afield is Sacre Cour in the Montmartre section. It%26#39;s worth a trip, but definitely take a taxi.

The weather is likely to be warm, but European weather is much more dramatic (changeable) than weather in the US. it can be sunny, then pour down rain, then be sunny again all in one afternoon (kind of like Hawaii if you%26#39;ve ever been there?). So, be prepared for everything. Besides, even in the rain, it%26#39;s still Paris!!

If you like boat trips, try the Batobus tour on the Seine. They have dinner cruises too, and the dock all along the river.

Have a great time!!

...................... hi mdwest..................

..............................thanks very very much for your reply, i shall make notes of your suggestions and take them along with us, getting nearer now to the time and i cannot wait........!!

..................Am really hoping that for the 4 days it does not rain very much, here in the UK, really we have not had our summer at all, 3 months of solid rain, floods etc, unbelievable, am so lucky we had our family vacation early this year, in April and we had lots of sun,(Maldives) it will (i suppose), have to keep me going now til next summer (!)....

Last time i was in Paris was 1979, just a very short visit, so i think i will notice a change.....

We are flying BA to CDG airport, so now we just have to sort out our transfer from airport to Hotel, but i do not know name of Hotel yet....!

%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt; So once again thanks for the help...!!!!!!!!

Best wishes and regards DmM......

ps - no have never been to Hawaii....yet..!!

am keeping eye on weather on www.paris-live.com (hoping!!)..x....

Would back up mdwest suggestion about Jardin des Tuileries.

That is close to you - make it your early morning stroll to get the atmosphere of Paris.

If you like art the don%26#39;t miss the Orangerie in there - Monets museum is ideal for a short visit.

Notre Dame is on Ile de la cite-make sure you also stroll the other Isle - Isle St Louis.

Lots of good lunch spots on there on Rue Ile St Louis - can recommend Cafe Med - amazing quality %26amp; value 3 course lunch.

Top end of Palais Royal is Restaurant Grand Vefour if you are looking for a special(expensive) treat.

Most of the restaurants I can recommend are over in the 7th near the tower.

By all means look at my posting but obviously you need a taxi or metro back.

You are also close to the Marais area - some varied and interesting restaurants there and you shouldn%26#39;t miss Place Vosges anyway!

Have a great trip

Neal

Yes get good comfortable shoes and stroll the city - It is the best way.
