French mountains in late September

We are planning to go in the second half of september to do some light walking (nothing too strenuous as we have 2 young children who we will carry in child carriers). However, most resorts (even those in the maritime alps) seem to close around the first weekend of September. Does anyone have any recommendations? We don%26#39;t want to book accomodation, only to find that we end up in somewhere that is closed. Having walked through Tignes on a long distance walk (before children!) as the shops were being shut until Christmas, we have a real dread of what it could be like.

Was motorcycling throught the Massif Central in mid-late Sept last year, it was a lovely area and plenty of campsites looking good.

There are not really any true %26#39;resort%26#39; towns, but you could try somewhere like Le Puy En Velay which is a really striking looking city, and very interesting, start of the Pilgrims Route to Santiago de la Compostella, so a good area for walking and certainly %26#39;mountainous%26#39; enough to satisfy you with 2 young%26#39;uns I would think. The weather then was beautiful, too.
