Prices of art in Montmartre?

I%26#39;m sure each artist varies, but what would one expect to pay for having their portrait sketched in 11x14 inch size?

How much would 16x20 inch oil on canvas be?

I understand you can only give me averages, but that will be helpful.

Merci!

Depending on the media, and also on how busy it is that day, you can start at 50.00 Euros for a sketch.

It depends entirely on the artist and what day it is.

I had a really crap pastel portrait done years ago (so crap my sister asked who the woman in the picture was) -- and it set me back 200FF (about about 30 Euros now) -- but I paid for the fun of getting my portrait done on my first visit to Montmartre.

Several years later, I had an absolutely amazing pastel portrait done -- the gentleman created a portrait that is absolutely me, but makes me look stunningly gorgeous -- and it cost me 50 Euros. Definitely a bargain -- and in no way set to what I%26#39;d paid before!

|||

Don%26#39;t forget, you certainly can bargain a bit with the artist - if it%26#39;s a slow day, they would rather take less than not make the sale.

|||

Sunshine: Thanks - how will I find this gentleman? Stunningly gorgeous would be a tall order, but it%26#39;s worth searching for!

|||

Wander and watch the work in progress -- DON%26#39;T make a judgement on the pieces they have up for display -- that%26#39;s how I got the awful one.

The gentleman who did the lovely portrait works only in pastels, and has a gift for making women look stunning -- he had work lined up for the rest of the day, judging by the crowd of women watching him finish my portrait.

The last time I saw him, he had salt-and-pepper shoulder length wavy hair, and wears glasses...not very descriptive, unfortunately -- but his work definitely stands out from the rest.

I had a wonderful watercolor portrait done for 35E! It%26#39;s huge and has a very good likeness of me.

I have bought small oil paintings and small watercolors for 15E. Definitely ask what their best price is and offer a little less. Some artists take credit cards but not all of them and ATM%26#39;s are hard to find near Place du Tertre so make sure you have enough cash to cover it. Although, showing the artist that I really did not have much cash on me was how I got my portrait so cheap. He benefitted because my portrait was very good and he had customers lined up afterwards.

Walk around for a while and watch them work. They all have different styles. Choose the one that appeals to you and has a style of painting or drawing that would best capture your face.

I%26#39;ve seen paintings in oil up on Montmartre for over 1000 Euros. They were done by a very good artist. I just wish I could have afforded it. On the other hand, I bought a very primative water color painting of Sacre Coeur by a little elderly black lady who I see up there quite often for 10 Euros. I bought it mainly because she was so sweet, asking so little and I just liked the painting. I don%26#39;t find that the artists bargain much, really. They will give you a special deal if you buy two.

|||

only buy from an artist who is actually painting before you. Some buy from you-don%26#39;t-know-where, and claim it is their work. Prices are veeeery expensive, like 40 euros fro a tiny painting, up to 200euros and more for a larger one!

For portraits, i have usually seen prices around 50 euros but you can discuss, only go for an artist whom you have seen doing the portrait of someone else before! I had one when i was a little girl and it looks like a cute little girl, but not like me!

travelbugbit -

raphy has given you very good advise (hi raphy, nice to see

a post of yours again).

On my 2nd or 3rd visit to Paris I spent quite a while

in Monmartre on the square. I knew I wanted an oil

painting. I watched the artist I selected paint the canvas

from begining to end so I knew it was his work.

The painting measured 5x6, cost me E100 and is

hanging in our dining room.

Thanks to everyone - btw, where is %26quot;you-know-where%26quot;?

Are there discounted places for local art?
