Did we get took or just bad traffic?

We recently took a Taxi Parisan from CDG to the 7th. Traffic seemed very heavy compared to a previous trip to Paris. Rather than the 45 Euro or so we expected, the fare was 75E!

The driver took a much different route than on our first trip. But on the other hand traffic was jammed. We sat still at several intersections and did the inch along dance to get into the main traffic flow. Our driver seemed to be falling asleep a couple times.

Not a huge crisis or anything. We had a great trip. Just wondering if this is cost is terribly out of line.

Any thoughts?

How long did your trip take? Waiting time is over €25 euros an hour, which can add up quickly when you are stuck in traffic. I live in the north of Paris, and my usual fare (non Sunday rate) is about €35. Once I got stuck in stop and go traffic and the total was €80!

Depending on the time of day, there can be a big difference in traffic. When we arrived on a Monday morning the traffic into the city was horrendous. It took forever. When we left, on a Sunday morning there wasn%26#39;t any traffic. Next time maybe a shuttle would be a good way to go since you pay in advance, but I think we paid about 70 euros each anyway.

BTW, the drivers usually cut through the city to get to the 7th.

With genuine %26quot;official%26quot; taxis, I think there is an address you can write to if you think a fare was excessive. The driver should give you a receipt and then you write to the address, explaining why you feel you were overcharged. It%26#39;s probably too late this time, but worth remembering for next time.

Taxis drivers do not usually %26quot;cut through the city%26quot; to get to the 7th. We always stay in the 7th and the driver typically enters Paris via Port Maillot. Once, because of an accident, the driver came in from the east. Our taxi fare was over €60 because of another accident on the way into Paris where two highways merge. It was a serious accident, involving one or more motorcyles. Paramedics were treating injured people on the highway, and several lanes were blocked.

Rates vary with time of day and day f week. Traffic is not the fault of the taxi driver, and waiting fees do apply. The slower the vehicle is moving, the higher the rate as well. You can find the rates at http://www.taxi-paris.net/page38.html

So long as the meter had only the base fare on in when you got in the taxi, and you took an official Taxi Parisien, you were not %26quot;taken%26quot;.

djboooks - my experience is different from yours. I guess I had different drivers. I have also stayed in the 7th on many trips.

We arrived on a Friday, mid morning. So it sounds like our fare was not excessive considering the traffic. I checked the meter when we started and it did not have much on it.

I still think I would rather take my chances with a taxi as opposed to dealing with the shuttle companies or RER.

Hello

Taxi fares are unpredictable because of traffic--from and to CDG. The A1 is a very busy motorway. We used to take taxis but have stopped altogether.

The best--in our experience--is to take the RATP coach to Opera (rue Scribe, in front of the American Express main office across the street from the Opera house walking West). It is safe, fast, and reliable. They look just like regular Parisian RATP buses. The RER station AUBER is about 100 yards to the West so you can go anywhere from there.

The Air France coaches to %26amp; from Porte Maillot to CDG are not bad either but Porte Maillot is not central as its name indicates.

The RER is a bit of a trek, I agree but on some specially busy days (the Friday preceding a national holiday and the Sunday afternoon following one), it is the only solution if you wish to catch your plane).

It is easy to ask forum members whether such and such a date might be difficult.

As a rule traffic is heavy

--to CDG every evening 5p.m. to 9 p.m.

--from CDG every morning 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. (bad for planes arriving from the East coast)

Have a nice trip.
