Apartment near Le Procope

Hi

My wife and I are to stay in an apartment (booked by couple we are travelling with) that a few doors down from Le Procope restuarant. This is our first time to Paris and have no idea about the area.

Does anyone know what the area is like

What district will this be and is this good for a first timer.

Are we close enough to anything

Any help is greatly appreciated

This is an extremely central and vibrant part of town, the 6th arrondissement, very near the Boulevard St. Germain and the famous cafes of that street. The area itself is bustling day and night.

You are walking distance to just about all the central sights: Latin Quarter, Notre Dame, Ile St. Louis, Louvre, etc.

I absolutely LOVE this section of town! My fave café is right on the corner, Le Relais Odeon.

The street you%26#39;ll be staying on - rue de l%26#39;Ancienne Comédie - is right off of Boul. St. Germain near Odeon Metro station. I think of this area as a bit of a transition from the medical schools and other institutes of the Latin Quarter to the more upscale and trendy St. Germain shopping area. There are 2 movie theatres at Odeon, and the post office is just down the street.

Paris is wonderful in its design in that everything you need is in your arrondissement. There%26#39;s no reason to have to schlepp halfway across the city for your daily needs. Unlike many American cities where you have things all over the place, Paris neighborhoods have what you need within a few streets. Of course if you%26#39;re looking for specialized things you%26#39;ll have to go to those places that have it.

There are wine shops, smaller groceries and a traiteur (hot take away food place) nearby on rue de Buci and along rue Saint-André des Arts. They will be helpful for those meals when you don%26#39;t wish to eat out. Further down St. Germain at 50 rue de Rennes is a Monoprix. It reminds me of a small version of a Target or more upscale five-and-dime. You can find housewares, clothing, personal items like toothpaste and shampoo, as well as a food store on the lower level. Decent, inexpensive stuff that any city dweller needs.

I know others have commented that Le Procope was sketchy in terms of food and/or service but my husband and I enjoyed a lovely meal there. And my DH is a tough customer!

Hope you enjoy your trip!

PS: keeping the residents of Minneapolis in our thoughts!

Thanks for the quick response and the great insights about the area. I feel a whole lot better now.

Also thanks for keep the Minneapolis folks in your thoughts

It is a lovely area, close to the Seine, Point Nuef and Notre Dame. I would agree with the previous poster (well, previous before your reply) in that my husband and I had a lovely menu meal at Le Procope. The service and the food were good and my hubby said it was the best creme brulee he had ever had (and he has had A LOT, believe me!!!)
