car needed to tour NOrmandy/Mont St Michel?

we are planning to visit the area, and will most likely arrive from London via the Dover to Calais boat OR maybe the Newhaven to Dieppe option., Either way, I assume I need to rent a car when we arrive. I keep hearing people say no car is needed, just take the train where you want to go, BUT in the country , wont I need one?

I THINK we want to visit the Normandy beach area, and also Mt St Michel. Not sure where else but regardless

SHould I rent a car, and would they be available at the boat dock or train station at Calais or Dieppe?

Yes, IMHO, you will need a car to make the best of Normandy.

Yes, there should be no problems renting a car in either Calais or Dieppe (or even Cherbourg: another channel port option).

The Normandy Beaches are very interesting.

Mont St. Michel is also worth visiting (go early in the morning, less crowds). If you are in Mont St. Michel, then it is only a very short drive down to St. Malo (Brittany) which is a lovely town.

Bayeux is also a must-see. It is a very easy town to get around.

Thanks for all of the advice! It is GREATLY appreciated!

Yes, absolutely rent a car. This is a rural area. Driving is easy and a rental car will let you get around where and when you want.

Consider doing a tour of the D-Day beaches. Check out the %26quot;BattleBus%26quot; website. They do a great job and leave out of Bayeux, a charming little town. Even if you don%26#39;t know much about the history, you will find it incredibly moving when you have someone to explain it to you.
