What area of Paris is best?

My mom, 14 year old daughter and I will be travelling to Paris for a week next April. We hope to see all of the major attractions, enjoy some reasonably priced meals, do some shopping (that would interest a 14 year old) and enjoy the culture.

That said, what neighborhoods within Paris would you recommend? We%26#39;d like a safe - moderatly priced hotel, access to public transportation, access to grocery and other shops.

Thanks for your help!

We just returned from a week in Paris with 12 %26amp; 15 year old girls. We loved our neighborhood just north of the Louvre. The central area let us walk to almost everything, and there were 2 very close metro lines for further out travel. Rue de Rivoli was super close and had Etam, Primki (?) and a huge Sephora all of which the girls loved. We were on an extremely tight budget, so most of our meals were from the fantastic Monoprix grocery on Opera. We rented a studio apartment from Vacation in Paris (#10) which had a roof top terrace. Hope this is helpful to you.

Hotel Jeanne D%26#39;Arc in Marais is a nice place with a great price. Don%26#39;t wait to make a reservation becouse it fills very quickly. You will love the neighborhood. There are several grocery stores, tons of shops and Metro stations very close by.

I%26#39;d recommend the left bank area called the Latin Quarter. This is where the famous Sorbonne University is sited and has loads of book shops, cafes, cinemas and clubs. It%26#39;s also minutes walking to Ile de la Cite for the Notre Dame (but better value restaurants next door on the Ile St-Louis). You should stroll through the Luxemborg Gardens and then vist Musee d%26#39;Orsay - a far better bet for you mum and daughter as it%26#39;s more compact than the Louvre and has something that should appeal to everyone.

Enjoy the trip and try to walk around as much as possible - you%26#39;ll invariably find some great squares and lunchtime cafe%26#39;s. we last stayed in a Best western near the Musee de Cluny and they have several good value hotels in this area.

we like central, near the river, and walkable destinations, restaurants and shopping. We have found the 7th near the Invalides is good for us. We stay at the hotel du Palais Bourbon (www.hotel-palais-bourbon.com)on rue de Bourgogne - it runs between the Podin Museum and the Nationale Assemblies. We find it reasonable (110-150 euros with breakfast) with large rooms and modern bathrooms. We love that it has a neighborhood feel, (shops, patisseries, boulangeries, fruit, groceries) on the street and we are close enough to everything so that you can walk (eiffel tower, Arc du Triumph in one direction, Louvre,Notre Dame the other - 20 minutes, Place du Concorde - Orangerie, Champs, D%26#39;Orsay - each about five - 10 minute walk ) , Metro stations are close and the boutique areas are also close (St, Germain, rue Grennelle etc.) We definitely feel safe walking at any time and there are several restaurants, cafes near by - both on Bourgogne and within a few blocks.

We love Boston and this neighborhood has a similar feel to Beacon/Newbery/Back Bay area

Whatever you decide, if you stay central and near the river (6th, 7th, 2nd, 1st, 4th), you should have a great trip

Thanks for the tip on the Palais Bourbon - I%26#39;ve been looking for a hotel that could accomodate all three of us (and possibly 4 if my 11 year old joins us), and they are difficult to find. It sounds like this may fit the bill!

It seems that it will be easy enough to get around via public transportation for our site-seeing. Typically, we are very tired in the evenings and enjoy eating within a 5 minute walk from our hotel. Would there be kid-friendly restaurants close by? How about teen friendly shopping?

Palais Bourbon has Family rooms - not exactly sure what they entail but the twin rooms we have stayed in are quite large and can easily work as a triple at times.- (# 5, #8, #1) I think.

There are good restaurants in the area - One at the Assemblies end of the street - Cafe Bourbon - would definitely be easy with a younger child. There are one or two other places right near the hotel on Bourgogne - one Italian, one Chinese and a couple of Cafe style French. Futher afield - Esplanade is right across from the Invalides on Malbourg, Le Square is about 5-10 minutes on Rue St Dominic. Both would do well for teen agers I think.

There are some shops on the street and you are near Grennelle, and St Germain which are great for shopping (there%26#39;s a Bon Marche in that area -department store). Across the river up Place du Concorde, Rue Royale, Blvd Capuchines, gets you to Haussmann and Galeries Lafayette area - Lots of places to stop along the way also - a good walking morning .
