Drive or Train Amboise to Bayeux

Our family Mom, Dad and three adult children need to know, is it easy to drive from Amboise-Bayeux? Or, is the train easier? Know of any car rental in Amboise ?

It might be easier to drive, just because taking the train most likely would mean either multiple connections on local (not TGV) trains, or would mean going to Tours/St Pierre des Corps and getting the TGV back to Paris, and then a different train up to Bayeux.

How are you getting to Amboise initially? I assume you will have a car in Amboise, as there is not much you would be able to see without one. If you are taking the train from Paris, you probably would want to go to St Pierre des Corps and rent a car there (generally there are multiple rental agencies at the train stations, typically including Hertz and Avis), and drive to Amboise (maybe 20 minutes or so). So, most likely by the time you leave Amboise you already will have your car.

It is much quicker and easier to hire a car.

If you want to travel by train, you have to go into Paris, and then back out to Bayeux. According to

http://www.voyages-sncf.com/

the fastest time is 4 and a half hours.

According to

www.viamichelin.co.uk/

you can drive it in 3 and a half hours. The route is easy, it is the A28 motorway most of the way. Not certain about picking up hire cars in Amboise, but there are several car rental companies at the TGV station at St Pierre des Corps, about ten minutes drive from Amboise

Unless you have to keep the drive as short as possible (in which case it is generally the viamichelin suggested route), you could spend a day seeing the countryside between Amboise and Bayeux. Take the scenic route (the %26quot;Découverte%26quot; option on www.viamichelin.fr) from Amboise to 72300 Sablé-sur-Sarthe, which takes 3 1/2 hours. Have lunch at this pretty little town and then more scenic driving to Bayeux - 2 hours. We drove from Angers in the Loire to Alencon stopping at Sablé-sur-Sarthe and enjoyed seeing the countryside from the smaller %26quot;D%26quot; Departemental roads rather than the expressways.

Thank you for your suggestions. We will be taking the train from Paris-Amboise.. Maybe we will go to tours, rent a car and keep it for the duration of our trip..4 days amboise and 6 days in Bayeux. I hope we can rent a mini-van.

Taking the train to Tours/St Pierre des Corps (and getting a car there) would be a lot easier and faster - there is a small train station right in Amboise, but you would have to either take a regional (slow!) train, or transfer.
