Which Eastern French City??

My family (an 11 year old, 17 year old, and two adults) may be embarking on a trip to Europe, going through the Netherlands, Beligum, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

We will not be able to visit Paris (it would be quite out of the way going from Luxembourg to Switzerland), but there seem to be many small cities in that Eastern corner of France (the Lorraine or Alsace region), such as Strasbourg, Nancy, and Metz.

Since we%26#39;ll be going to many other countries in the region, it would be nice if the French city we visit were very FRENCH (not German or Swiss in style), so my family can get a real taste of France!

Any suggestions on a great, typically-French city in the Lorraine or Alsace region of France?

Thank you!!

I can%26#39;t respond about the other cities you mention, but we were able to enjoy an afternoon in Nancy recently and enjoyed it very much. It was very different from the cities and towns of Normandy and the Loire which we also visited, but different from those of Belgium, Lux, and Germany also.

It was the center of the Art Nouveau movement and there are several buildings which feature it and a museum as well. Place Stanislaus is a beautiful town square and very worth visiting.

My understanding is that Metz is more industrial and Strasbourg more german, though I may be wrong.

Thank you, I%26#39;ll look into Nancy!

I%26#39;ll definitely know to stay away from Metz (Industrial isn%26#39;t really my taste), and Strasbourg (since we%26#39;ll already be seeing many German-influenced cities).
