I am driving from the UK to St Jean de Monts in August with two kids under 10! I am going via Calais, can anyone tell me what journey time I am looking at? I am dreading the constant %26#39;are we there yet%26#39; question which i know will come thick and fast. I could do with a time guideline if anyone can help me.
Thanks

Well it%26#39;s a long way! I guess 7 to 9 hours depending on stops. You can use autoroutes virtually the whole way, which will be quick, boring and costly!
Take A16/A28/A29 to near Le Havre then pick up A13 to Caen, the A84 to Avranches and Rennes then N137 to Nantes. You%26#39;re nearly there, but tantalisingly far away. Nantes is a pig to get through and then you%26#39;ve got minor roads to St Jean. Whilst in St Jean, don%26#39;t miss the Passage dui Gois, a causeway in the sea, to Nourmoutier. The kids will love it, but check times locally - only passable at low tide.

I have posted on my website routes to the Vendee from most of the Channel ports. People have been especially grateful to know how to get round Nantes!

We are travelling same route (Calais - St Jean) in August and have elected to break the trip with a stop at Le mans, will do the same with return stopping in Rouens. Seems best solution with a four and two year old. Have done the same on previous trips, pre-booked family rooms in hotels are cheap (see expedia) and it breaks it up for the adults too.

Just back from St Jean De Monts, fabulous place . Drove from Cherbourg approx 5hours, easy drive on the motorways, no problems, though you have to be quick to spot the motorway services. When you approach Nantes there is Total service station (it is well signed) take the slip lane after the service station and you bypass Nantes and plain sailing to St Jean. download a travel route from the rac or aa on the net. gives you everything you need

We have just come back from ST Jean DONT go through Nantes, go to St Nazaire and over the bridge that way, you will avoid Nantes and its a much nicer journey and just as quick if not quicker. You will be stuck in traffic in Nantes, so take the signs that say St Nazair and then go over the bridge. You will practically be there then!

Have done the jouney both from Caen (quicker but more expensive) and Calais. The journey of about 430 miles from Calais took about 8 hours in total with a couple of decent breaks included. At the time I had two boys (both under 10) and we bought a cheap DVD player to put in the back of the car and also took a couple of Harry Potter audio books to listen to. The entertainment saw the journey fly by. In truth the route is very easy and French roads are far less congested than ours and the only bit of the route which seemed to drag was the section between Rouen and Le Mans which was predominantly single carriageway (although some of this route is now dualled I believe). We love St Jean De Monts, loads to do with the children and fantastic beach and I%26#39;m sure you will too.
