Cigarettes

Hi

Can anyone tell me if you can buy cigaretts in Kennedy in the duty free shops on the way to France.

Thanks

Yes, of course. The customs limit is 200 cigs per person. You can also buy them on the plane - depending on the airline, they are sometimes cheaper.

better stop to smoke ....

YES...you can purchase cigarettes---as well as liquor, perfume, candy, cheap jewelry, and aother assorted items. BUT...if you are a smoker, you probably have a preferred brand. The Duty Free shop may NOT carry your preferred brand. So with this in mind, it might be a good idea to telephone the Duty Free shop ay JFK directly to find out if they carry your preferred brand...or an alternative.

There are a couple / few different Duty Free vendors at the various JFK terminals, so check the Port Authority-JFK web site for the one(s) at your scheduled departure terminal.

Last I looked, they carried all the major brands: Marlboro, Benson %26amp; Hedges, Newports, etc. If you prefer methol or %26quot;ultra lights%26quot; you may not find what you are looking for.

While the Customs limit is one carton, no one will care if you bring two. So long as the quantity is reasonable for the length of your stay, and they%26#39;re for %26quot;personal consumption%26quot; (as opposed to gifts, resale...), no one will care.

When you get to France, there are two lines - one for those with nothing to declare and another if you have anything to declare. Technically, you are supposed to declare over one carton, but I%26#39;ve seen folks with a shopping bag of cigarettes in plain sight going through the nothing to declare lanes (where there is no one checking anything).

I don%26#39;t think it is a good idea not to declare cigarettes or anything else when entering a country. I would be worried that I would be caught and fined on top of any duty payable and/or in other trouble. I took 3 cartons in to London Heathrow once and declared them and had to pay a huge amount of duty on them, even though I was going to be in Europe for about 6 weeks. The customs officer also recommended that I give up smoking. The French may have an exception for personal consumption but I would check that first.

It%26#39;s generally good advice not to mess with any national customs service....but in my experiences, I%26#39;ve never been troubled by any Customs authorities over an extra carton or two of Duty Free cigarettes..or an extra bottle of Duty Free liquor. Bear in mind that if you are traveling with a companion, they%26#39;re also entitled to the same allowance.

And as noted, the Duty Free shops do indeed carry almost every major US brand....and some European brands...but definitely not all of the various selections withing a particular %26#39;..brands..%26#39; offerings. As an example, I smoke Parliment Light 100s. The Duty Free stores usually carry the Parliment brand in Kings...but not the 100s that I prefer....and there is often a sigbificant difference. So...if it matters to you, simply look up the telephone listing for the particular Duty Free shop that serves your JFK or EWR departure terminal and make the call (it will only take a few minutes).....or take your chances.
