Can anyone suggest the best area to stay with 6 yr olds, preferably near the beach, also any hotel recommendations would be great

Any of the beaches in Basse-Normandie are good for 6 year olds, sandy, uncrowded and flat so very safe for paddling! Try somewhere near Bayeux.
