When I was in Paris last year, I was told there was one bank that didn%26#39;t charge a fee for withdrawals. I%26#39;m not talking about my bank in the US, I%26#39;ve got that squared away. Does anyone know the name of the Parisian bank?

If you are with Bank of America then it%26#39;s BNP Paribas.

I%26#39;ve never had a bank in France - or anywhere I%26#39;ve traveled in Europe - charging me an ATM withdrawal fee. The fee comes from your own U.S. bank at home that charges you for withdrawing money from a non-owned bank. When I travel overseas, I avoid fees altogether by using an ATM card from my credit union, which allows me a number of fee-free withdrawals a month.

I agree that it depends on your own bank. I bank with First Republic, which not only doesn%26#39;t charge me for withdrawals from other banks, but refunds any fees the ATM owner assesses (the standard %26quot;this is going to cost you $2, do you want to continue%26quot; issue). This is true in Europe as well as in the US. But, that said, don%26#39;t confuse the withdrawal fee with the conversion charge to change the withdrawal from euros or pounds to dollars, because all banks will charge for that.

If your ATM transaction uses either the Visa/PLUS or the MasterCard/Cirrus network, that network will levy a 1% currency conversion charge (above the interbank exchange rate). Your home bank will pass on this 1% charge to you. Any additional currency conversion charge levied by any bank is simply price-gouging.

For those on the forum from Britain, Nationwide do not charge a fee for using ATMs in Europe and they don%26#39;t charge commission on the currency either. As I recall the exchange rates are favourable too. We have a savings account with them, with a Visa debit card, which we use specifically for our holiday money.
