Eze, Villefranche, Nice and Monaco

Just returned from a wonderful trip - many thanks to %26#39;local experts%26#39; and other TA posters for great info. Happy to answer questions or give tips - stayed in Eze at the Hotel les Terrasses for a wedding at the Chevre d%26#39;or and Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild (just heavenly, unimaginably fabulous!) then the Hotel Darse at Villefranche. Used taxis (expensive) and buses (excellent) and visited Nice and Monaco.

Will post hotel and restaurant reviews.

Have now posted reviews of Hotel Darse in Villefranche and Hotel les Terrasses, Eze.

Now, prepare to be very jealous! Easy bus trip from Nice airport to Eze Village (via Nice bus station), lunch, then short taxi to Hotel les Terrasses. Enjoyed wonderful views from hotel pool then first night meal at La Mere Germain in Villefranche with other wedding guests. An excellent fairly elaborate and expensive meal (superb fish), great service, in a very picturesque setting.

Next day we were collected from our hotel at 5 p.m in all our finery (dress code was black tie - other tourists in Eze were taking photos of us crazy Brits in DJs and evening dresses in 30 degrees!) Wonderfully romantic setting for a wedding - if anyone is contemplating Le Chevre d%26#39;Or for a wedding - it was breathtaking (as I%26#39;m sure the bill was, too). Surely it must have some of the best views on the Cote d%26#39;Azur. Kir Royal and limitless Tattinger champagne and gorgeous canapes after the ceremony with those views would have been enough, but by about 8 p.m. we were off to the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild on Cap Ferrat.

Oh dear, more champagne and even better canapes. Jazz band and lovely gardens, fountains and house to admire before we sat down at tables on the lawns for a 7 course meal by a Michelin starred chef (to the Monaco royal family, it was rumoured). Food to die for with different wines served with each course. Dancing in the villa from about 1 a.m and we were back at our hotel around 5 a.m. Unfortunately, i must be getting a bit old for such excesses and felt just a touch below par for most of the next day!!

However, next night about 30 of us went to Le Mas Provencal in Eze. Check out review of Quality Hotel Carlton in Beaulieu by Dr.MikeHarris %26#39;Humble Pie....%26#39; . Had an amazing time, a fairly rowdy party to be honest, great food in a ridiculously overdecorated setting but we thought the service was too pushy and we were on 3 separate tables and were all overcharged - very greedy owners we thought, as they must have made a small fortune that night. Also, they initially refused to take credit cards - said their machine wasn%26#39;t working and we should go off to the ATM to get cash!

Next day most of the other guests left, but husband and I transferred to the Hotel Darse at Villefranche. (see hotel review). We just loved Villefranche - extremely friendly, very attractive little town in great location for exploring the area with good swimming from 2 beaches. First night we went to Le Cosmo - much more our style (and price range) than La Mer Germain, and had a wonderful time, so much so that we returned on the 2 subsequent nights. We usually like to try diferent places to eat, but this was so nice we didn%26#39;t want to risk being disappointed elsewhere! So, we had 6 different starters and 6 different main courses - all delicious, as were the jugs of local rose wine (full wine list if you wish). Went to Nice by bus (port , Old Town, market, Promenade des Anglais - enjoyed looking inside the Hotel Negresco). Also enjoyed Monaco (again by bus) - changing of the guard at the palace (11.55 a.m.) has to be done, plus lots of walking around the harbour and up to the casino area for fabulous views. Oh yes, buses back to the airport were fine, but on a hot day it was quite a tough walk uphill with luggage to the bus stop in Villefranche.

Oh, I just want to go back! Sorry to have rambled on, but hope this is of interest to others. We were very lucky to have experienced such a stylish, elegant and extravagent wedding and i will never forget it, but many thanks again for all the TA tips - Villefranche is definitely to be recommended and somewhere i%26#39;d love to re-visit.
