status of the removal of the causeway and dam construction

We%26#39;re planning a trip to France next June and would love to go to Mont-St- Michel, but want to know how far along the construction has come. We%26#39;re considering whether to or not to wait until the project is finished, and hope that we can return to France in the future. Thanks for any insight you could us!

We were in Mont St. Michel a few weeks ago - the only work we saw being done was to the external walls - there was scaffolding up.

Other than that, the causeway appears completely intact and I didn%26#39;t notice any dredgers.

The causeway is interesting, but the Mont itself is spectacular. The causeway is only one small element. It would be a pity to miss out

According to free magazine sent out quarterly by the Conseil General de la Manche to residents I don%26#39;t think major work is due to start until late 2008/early 2009, for completion in 2012.

We were there at Easter 2007, and I specifically looked (from the highest point of the abbey at MSM) for any signs of construction. You could see all along the coast of both Normandy and Brittany and there was absolutely no sign of any construction or pre-construction work anywhere. I had really been expecting to see SOMETHING happening.

Even when they start construction, believe me they will make sure you can still get there. Tourism is an essential part of Mont St. Michel.

Dr Debi - we drove along the coast to St. Malo and back in the other direction as well. There was no sign of any work.

We were also on the Cotentin Peninsula, looking out over Le Mont and saw absolutely nothing.

I honestly had expected to see some sort of work being done while we were there.

Before we left I found a website with a better explanation of the project, but this is the only one I can seem to find right now.

www.lemontsaintmichel.info/Ensablement.aspx

There was a billboard along the causeway near the mainland which had some explanation as well (though I believe it was in French). What I got from both the website and the billboard is that the part of the project they are working on first is the building of some dams which will aid in allowing the water to push the sediment out. The last century has changed the way the water circulates, and the causeway is just one part of the whole component. So the mainland project is first as it is the rivers which must push the silt awaw. You might not see the work as it is further inland from the bay.

However they are very aware that visitation to the Mont must not be hindered and I would not wait to go. If you see the construction of the new bridge so much the better.
