How easy/difficult is it to get to Arles from CDG via TGV? All the schedules I find in English on the web go to Avignon only, but I can%26#39;t find definitive info on how to get from Avignon to Arles. There%26#39;s a great hotel deal in Arles but I won%26#39;t take it if getting there is too much of a hassle, especially after flying 7 hours into CDG and training to Avignon. I%26#39;ll just keep the hotel in Avignon and do a day trip to Arles later.
Also, is it really necessary to buy TGV tickets while still in the US? I recall much cheaper rates when we went from Paris to Bordeaux and bought tickets in Paris.
We arrive CDG on August 2, so seats may be harder to get.
Thanks to anyone who answers!

Hi Tewksbury:
My wife and I did the TGV from CDG to Avignon after an overnight flight from EWR...and it was very comfortable and easy. We then stayed in Avignon as a base (which we loved) and rented a car for easy day trip to Arles, St Remy, Les Baux....and the Luberon Gordes and Rousillon...it was fabulous...the day trips from Avignon are very easy if that is your choice

We have reservations on a direct tgv train from Gare De Lyon in Paris to Arles. It is very early in the morning, but goes there without stops. in about 4 hours.Perhaps this would work for you? I made the reservations early and a family of 4 is traveling for 100 euros, which I thought was quite a good bargain.

You can check directly on the SNCF website for all available trains and fares. You can purchase tickets on this site and pay the same fare as you would in France. You definitely want to get them now, as travel south from Paris in August is very heavy.
All TGV tickets must be purchased in advance.
To use the SNCF site follow these instructions:
tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187147-c3019/Paris:F…
I followed these, and puchased tickets, then printed them out at home before I left. No problems.
Yes the site is in French, but you can figure it out. I did, and I don%26#39;t speak french.....

I just checked the SNCf site and there is an English language choice!
On August 2 there are several trains listed, but all require a change in Avignon. Travel time looks like about 4 hours.

One more thing.....
On the SNCF site your start point is:
ROISSY (95) - STATION SERVED: CDG
and your destination:
ARLES (13)

Excellent advice; thanks! I%26#39;ve been to that website, but am still unclear about catching a later train should we miss ours. I%26#39;m nervous that our flight will be late! And everything I%26#39;m hearing on the news in the last few days about delays isn%26#39;t helping much.
I%26#39;d opt for the exchangeable/refundable tickets, just to be on the safer side. But does doing so guarantee that we can simply take a later train?
It%26#39;s definitely cheaper, no question about that. And I%26#39;ve heard from our hotel that trains between Avignon and ARles are quite frequent.
Thanks all.

I can%26#39;t resist following up on my original query about going to Arles from CDG via the TGV. I used the SNCF site, bought the cheap, non-refundable seats on the hopes that our flight would not be delayed and we%26#39;d have no problem making our train. Well, as luck would have it, the flight was on time but... Who would ever have guessed that the terminal would be closed due to a bomb scare? We had no choice but to wait for more than an hour while police and security blew up an abandoned suitcase, and we missed the train by only 3 minutes! The staff at the TGV station couldn%26#39;t have been nicer or more accommodating, and very generously allowed us to exchange our tickets for a later train, at no additional cost.
TA advice is wonderful, all worked out very well, and the TGV trip to Avignon went on without a further hitch.
Great advice and thanks to all who contributed to our wonderful journey!
