We´re trying to find out how we can get from San Sebastian (SPain) to Marseille (France). tried looking up flights but all very expensive. can do bus or train...any suggestions please help.

The most logical suggestion is :
1. Take the local train from San Sebastian to Hendaye, just over the border in France. Freqient daily service details at www.euskotren.es
2. From Hendaye there are trains to Marseilles - details at www.voyages-sncf.com but a quick search brought up several trains mostly with a transfer connection at Bordeaux. There is also an overnight journey possible by a direct train leaving Hendaye at 1853 but it arrives in Marseilles at the unearthly hour of 518am!
Major drawback might be that the journey Hendaye - Marseilles by train takes 9 or 10 hours but as you say air fares are really expensive. If you reserve a train ticket in France in advance of travel you might get a good price - reservations are essential for almost all the long distance trains.
I hope that helps.

1. try posting in the San Sebastian section, you may get more response.
2. By far the best way from San Sebastian is to change at Hendaye and then change again at Toulouse, you are still looking at an 8 hour+ journey though.
3. Do not change in Bordeaux, you are travelling 100%26#39;s of kilometres in the wrong direction

Just to comment that on the French Railways website, almost all of the connections listed Hendaye - Marseille require a change of train at Bordeaux. This is given as both the quickest and easiest (fewer changes of train) option.
The best weekday journey I found however comes out thus:
Hendaye 0835 arrive Toulouse 1250* change trains
Toulouse leave 1304 arrive Marseille 1639 or
Toulouse leave 1419 arrive Marseille 1825
* I note that on the printed timetable I have the arrival time is shown as 1306 on certain days and 1340 on certain others, but not 1250.. Typical.
One way fare shown as €79.
But that is maybe a bit early if coming from San Sebstian, as it%26#39;s between 45 minutes and 1 hour journey from there to Hendaye depending on which of the several stops in San Sebastian one starts from.
The next two connections Hendaye to Marseille are both via Bordeaux leaving Hendaye at 0931 and 1025; these are the only other daytime possibilities my search found.
Most journeys Hendaye - Toulouse through Pau and Tarbes require a change of train at Bayonne and again at Tarbes sometimes with long waits.
The overnight direct train Hendaye - Marseilles takes the latter route.
I trust this clarifies the situation.
